How an expert would do it: excavate ~200mm and set solid edging first — the edge is what keeps gravel off the road. Membrane down, then 150mm of MOT Type 1 compacted in two passes with a hired wacker plate: that layer, not the gravel, is the driveway. Finish with just 50mm of 20mm angular stone. Deeper gravel is not better — loose stone churns; compacted sub-base doesn't.

Refresh before you rebuild. If the drive already works and just looks tired, the refresh option above transforms it for about a tenth of a new build. Rake the hollows level first — half the 'missing' gravel is just displaced.

Plain stone reads the same. Once it's down and carrying a little dust, £75-a-bag golden gravel looks remarkably like £180-a-bag branded decorative stone. Spend on the sub-base, not the stone's name.

Don't gravel the whole width. A car needs wheel tracks and a door-opening zone — not wall-to-wall stone. Leaving planted strips or a central bed saves stone and sub-base on every unpaved metre, drains better, and looks far more expensive than it is.

Grids only where they earn. Gravel grids matter on slopes and turning spots. Gridding a flat straight drive is £10–£20 per m² you don't need to spend.

Loose loads past five bags. Once you need 5+ bulk bags, a loose-tipped load per tonne is meaningfully cheaper — you just need a tipping spot and a barrow plan.

Recycled Type 1 (crushed concrete) 20–30% cheaper than quarried stone
Compacts to the same Type 1 spec and it's invisible under 50mm of gravel. The honest downside, straight from suppliers' own pages: it's a demolition by-product that can contain fragments of wood, plastic or metal, and batch quality varies more than quarried stone. Where wheels touch

The right pick where cars actually touch the edge — entrances, open corners, meeting the pavement. Haunched in concrete it's effectively permanent and holds a crisp line no timber can. No edging

Skipping edging entirely saves £5–£15/m — but only if walls already bound the drive
With an open edge, every wheel turn flicks stone onto the lawn (where it meets the mower, badly) and the pavement, the line blurs into a ragged fade, and the sub-base spreads sideways so the drive ruts faster. If walls or kerbs bound the drive, they are your edging — spend the money on stone instead. If any edge is open, £5/m is cheaper than the gravel you'll lose and the Saturdays you'll spend raking it back.

A new build is digging out the ground and building a drive from scratch, in three layers.

A refresh is spreading a thin layer of fresh stone over a gravel drive you already have.

Either way, the loose stones you see are only the top layer — the real driveway is a hard bed of packed crushed stone hidden underneath, and that is where most of the money goes.

The build, in order

1 · Dig out ~200mm across the whole drive and cart the earth away — on a 30m² drive that's 6m³ of soil, which needs a skip, not bin bags.

2 · Edging in first. Edging is the solid border round the drive — timber boards, metal strip, or a row of bricks stood on end (a soldier course). Set it firmly: it is the only thing that stops your gravel spilling into the street.

3 · Membrane down. The membrane is a tough fabric sheet that lets water through. Overlap the joins by 100mm. It keeps soil and stone apart — so the stone can't sink into mud — and stops weeds growing through.

4 · Sub-base in layers. The sub-base (the layer of packed stone underneath) is what carries the car. Lay 150mm of MOT Type 1 (crushed stone that packs down hard — the base under almost every drive and patio), squashed down with a wacker plate (a hired machine that vibrates the stone tight) in two passes of 75mm. This layer is the driveway; skip it and you're filling ruts by Christmas.

5 · Gravel last — 50mm of 20mm angular stone (stone with sharp edges, so the pieces lock together), raked level. On slopes, lay gravel grids (plastic honeycomb panels that hold the stones still) first and brush the stone into them.

That's typically £1,200–£2,200 for a 30m² single drive and £2,500–£4,200 for a 60m² double. Re-gravelling a drive you already have is far cheaper: £400–£600 in labour plus the stone.

Do I need planning permission for a gravel driveway?

Almost never. Gravel lets rainwater soak straight through, so it counts as a permeable surface — and permeable surfaces are exempt from the front-garden paving rules at any size. (Solid surfaces over 5m² need permission, or drainage to a soakaway — a buried pit that soaks the water away.) That exemption is one of gravel's quiet advantages over block paving and concrete.

How deep should a gravel driveway be?

Dig out about 200mm in total: 150mm of MOT Type 1 (crushed stone that packs down hard), squashed down in layers with a wacker plate (a hired vibrating machine), then 50mm of gravel on top. More gravel is not the fix for ruts — a deep loose layer just gets pushed around by tyres. The packed stone base carries the car; the gravel is only the surface you see.
