Two different shopping trips hide inside one lawn. The grass itself you should never buy unseen — every specialist posts free samples, and the wrong call on a whole roll is a £500+ mistake. The kit that fixes it down, though, is the strongest honest Amazon basket on this site. Where the budget option is a false economy, we say so.

Before you spend a penny on the roll — always: Order free samples: Grass Warehouse posts up to four ranges free, Trulawn sends up to four by Royal Mail in 2–3 working days. Judge them on the actual spot in morning and evening light. One trap: '30mm' isn't standardised between sellers, so sample from the shortlist you'd actually buy from.

Any real lawn, or a garden wider than 2m: Specialist cut-to-length: Grass Warehouse's 4m-wide range runs £6.99–£34.99/m², cut to your length, free delivery over £199 (£19.99 under). The tradeoff is logistics: 24m²+ orders need your help unloading, a 4m roll is a two-person lift, and drivers won't bend rolls or carry them through the house.

Tempted to one-click the grass itself on Amazon?: More defensible here than anywhere else we've checked: a well-reviewed 30mm (Tuda Antalya) is a flat £6.49/m² in 2m/4m/5m widths — cheaper than the specialists. But there's no sample first and the listing publishes no yarn or backing spec, and the headline-cheap rolls are 6mm doormat pile (£132 for 4m × 6m looks great until it arrives).

Ground needs digging out, no side access, or a mis-cut would wipe out the saving: Get three supply-and-fit quotes at £45–£85/m². A 40m² garden lands at £1,800–£3,400 fitted against £1,200–£1,600 in DIY materials — but excavation, disposal and the £200–£250 skip become the fitter's problem. Beware the suspiciously cheap quote that skips the compacted base: a wavy lawn in year two costs more to relay. Order samples and specify the exact grass anyway.

Artificial grass is plastic grass sold in big rolls, which you lay over a flat bed of packed stone and sand.

Pile is the length of the plastic blades — short pile (about 20mm) looks neat and flat, while longer pile (30mm and up) looks more like a real lawn.

You buy whole rolls in set widths, not the exact size of your lawn — so the trick is picking the widths that waste the least.

How much artificial grass do I need?

Measure your longest length and widest width. Then think in rolls, not area. Artificial grass comes in set widths — 1m, 1.5m, 2m, 3m and 4m. You buy whole strips of one width, cut to your length. That's why a 24m² lawn might need exactly 24m² (one 4m×6m roll) or 27m² (if you pick the wrong width). Which roll width should I buy — 2m or 4m?

Wider rolls mean fewer joins — a join is where two pieces of grass meet, and each one is extra work and a seam that might show. Narrower rolls often mean less waste. For a lawn 3.8m wide, a 4m roll is perfect. For a 2.1m path, two 1m strips beat cutting half a 4m roll away and binning it. Is artificial grass good for dogs?

Yes, if you pick the right type. Look for a dense 30–38mm pile with polyurethane (PU) backing — PU repels urine instead of absorbing it, which is what stops the smell after year one. Good drainage holes, plus kiln-dried sand (very dry sand you brush into the grass) on top, deal with accidents. Rinse it now and then and use a pet cleaner made for artificial grass to stop smells. Can I lay artificial grass myself?

A small rectangular lawn is a realistic weekend job. You dig out 50–75mm of soil. Then you pack down a base of MOT Type 1 (crushed stone that packs down hard — the base under almost every path and patio) topped with sharp sand. Lay a weed membrane (a sheet that stops weeds growing through), roll out the grass, join and pin it, then brush in sand. Artificial grass or real turf?

Real turf costs far less up front (£4–£9/m² delivered, £10–£27/m² laid) — but you'll be mowing, feeding and watering it for ever. Artificial costs £45–£70/m² fitted, then needs almost no looking after for a decade. Artificial is at its best in small, shady gardens where real grass struggles to grow.
